What Are the Dangers of Too Much Imitrex?

Imitrex is a medicine used to treat migraine and cluster headaches. It doesn't stop the headaches from occurring, but it does shorten the duration. There are few dangers in taking too much of it.

Symptoms

Imitrex that's in excess in the blood stream can cause certain dangers. Some dangers are shakiness, swelling in arms and legs and loss of feeling in the feet.

Proper dosage

Imitrex should be taken as prescribed by your doctor. In order to avoid dangers from too much of it, you should not take more than 200 mg. in tablets, 40 mg. in nasal spray and 12 mg. in injection form in a 24-hour period.

Risk

If you take Imitrex as a daily medicine, you are at risk of having too much in your body and risking dangers to your health. You should only take this medicine if it has been prescribed for you.

Treatment

One treatment to reverse the effects of too much Imitrex is to pump the person's stomach. Also treating individual symptoms may be helpful.

Likelihood of harmful effect

Only a few cases of harmful effects from too much Imitrex have been reported; all possible effects are not known. Harmful effects are otherwise rare with this medicine.
