Dogs of any size, age, breed or gender can develop any type of seborrhea.

Seborrhea can be divided into two groups: primary and secondary. Within these two groups, there are three types of seborrhea. By understanding the different types of seborrhea, the dog owner and veterinarian can identify and treat the problem and provide relief for the affected dog.

  1. Primary Seborrhea

    • Seborrhea that is primary can also be referred to as "congenital seborrhea." This means that the condition was present either at birth or soon after and is due to a genetic issue.

    Secondary Seborrhea

    • Secondary seborrhea is a direct result of injury to the skin. Injury can occur due to various skin infections, disorders such as hypothyroidism, nutritional issues, allergies or parasites.

    Seborrheic Demeratitis

    • This type of seborrhea features greasiness, flaking and mild to severe inflammation of the affected dog's skin.

    Seborrhea Oleosa

    • Also known as "oily seborrhea," seborrhea oleosa occurs when the dog's skin produces excessive amounts of oil. The coat will appear to be extremely oily and often will emit a foul odor.

    Seborrhea Sicca

    • Seborrhea sicca, also known as "dry seborrhea," is a skin disease in which the skin is extremely dry and only scaliness or scaling of the skin is present.
