Information Technology in Italy

When Internet use was exploding in other developed countries, Italy's information technology sector lagged behind. In 2009, trends show significant increases in computer use and a high potential for growth in the country's IT sector.

  1. Bureaucracy

    • Historically, observers blame tangled bureaucracy in the Italian government for hindering the proliferation of information technology.

    Statistics

    • In 2008, half of Italian families owned a personal computer and half of the population used the Internet. Eight years earlier, only 20 percent of the population used the Internet.

    Regulations

    • In 2008, Italy passed on antiterrorism law that requires Internet cafés to check the IDs of their customers and track the websites they visit. Some cafes have closed rather than be subject to this law.

    Regional

    • Informational and communication technology (ICT) exists in higher percentages in the north of Italy than the south. This is due to geographical and culture differences.

    Government Action

    • At the end of the 2000-2010 decade, the Italian government significantly increased the number of ICT grants available to universities and firms.
