Medication for a Runny Nose
Runny noses can occur as part of a cold or flu bug, as a result of allergies or in response to a sinus infection. The medication used to treat it depends on the cause.

Antihistamines

Antihistamines (purchased over the counter) are the most common medication to treat runny noses, especially those that arise from an allergy. Prescription versions are available for particularly stubborn cases.
Cromolyn

Cromolyn is available by prescription and keep the nose from running when allergens are in the air.

Steroids

Steroid nasal sprays and other steroid medication can be prescribed in instances in which antihistamines don't work.
Cold Medications

In cases in which a runny nose is caused by a cold, standard cold medication such as Benadryl may be effective. Homemade cold remedies such as hot tea or chicken soup may also be effective.
Saline Sprays

Saline sprays (available at most pharmacies) help fight runny noses caused by sinus infections. You can also make your own saline spray by mixing 1/4 tsp. of salt with 4 oz. of water.
