Propoxy Side Effects

Propoxy (also known as Darvocet) is a medication used to treat mild to moderate pain. There have been some side effects associated with the use of this medicine.

  1. Identification

    • Propoxyphene is combined with acetaminophen to increase pain tolerance and decrease the sensation of pain. It is a narcotic medication, but is weaker in strength than codeine or morphine.

    Benefits

    • Propoxyphene can help relieve mild to moderate pain. The recommended adult dosage is one or two tablets every four hours for pain. Exceeding six 100/650 mg tablets or twelve 50/325 tablets in a 24-hour period, could result in serious adverse effects.

    Common Side Effects

    • The most common side effects associated with the use of propoxyphene are dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, sedation and feeling light-headed. Since this drug is a narcotic, constipation is another common side effect.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Serious side effects include depressed breathing and death if the dosage is exceeded. If you are elderly or have lung disease, use this medicine with caution. This medication can be habit-forming, so it is best when used for short-term relief of pain.

    Warning

    • Tell your doctor if you have a history of alcohol or drug abuse, depression, thoughts of suicide, or if you take sedatives or tranquilizers. Fatalities have been reported with the misuse of this drug.
