Earthenware Vs. Fine China

Earthenware pottery

Pottery can be categorized as stoneware, earthenware or porcelain. This is based on the clay, the process it undergoes and the properties of the end product.

Background

Earthenware is one of the oldest forms of pottery found on all continents. Fine China or porcelain is thought to have originated in China during the Tang Dynasty (618 to 907 A.D.).

Clay Types

Traditionally, earthenware was made from clay found locally. Minerals in the clay are not uniform and the end product can vary. Fine China usually refers to hard porcelain or bone China. It is made from kaolin, petuntse and in the case of bone China, animal bone ash.

Process

Earthenware is fired at low temperatures and glazes are used to reduce the porosity. The porcelain is fired at high temperatures, which makes the clay nonporous and strong. If bone ash is added, the end product is translucent and white.

Uses

The earthenware is used for everyday tableware. Fine China is preferred for more formal settings.

Maintenance

When in doubt, fine China and earthenware should be washed in mild detergent.
