Vestibular Migraine Treatment

Vestibular migraine has also been referred to as migraine-associated vertigo, migrainous vertigo and migraine-associated dizziness. Vestibular migraines are characterized by severe vertigo, which can last from minutes to days. Treatment options are the same as for other types of migraines. Motion sickness medications are also used to help with the vertigo.

  1. Symptoms

    • The predominant symptom is vertigo. People feel as if they are moving or the environment around them is moving. Other symptoms include imbalance, nausea, visual vertigo (vertigo caused by movements or scenery), and head motion intolerance.

    Triptans

    • Triptans are one treatment option. Triptans narrow blood vessels in the brain, thus reducing swelling and head pain. Medication options include Treximet, Imitrex, Frova, Axert, Relpax, Amerge, Maxalt and Zomig.

    Vertigo Suppressants

    • Vestibular suppressants are medications that help reduce motion sickness or eye movements. Medications that can be used include Antivert, Ativan, Klonopin, Dramamine, Valium and Elavil.

    Anti-Nausea Medications

    • Anti-nausea medications, also known as anti-emetics, can also be used to help treat vestibular migraine symptoms. Some of the most commonly prescribed medications include Reglan, Zofran, Compazine and Phenergan.

    Sleep

    • A simple treatment option is sleep. Sleep helps reset the body and allows people to ride out and recover from migraines. Many of the vestibular suppressants and anti-emetics have sedating effects.
