Leaves of three, let it be.

A substance called urushiol causes poison ivy and poison oak rashes. Poison ivy and oak can cause reactions that warrant medical attention, but often, natural remedies used quickly will bring relief.

  1. Tea Tree Oil

    • Health 911.com reports that tea tree oil can be applied to a poison oak or poison ivy rash several times a day to promote healing and reduce itching. Tea tree oil should be diluted with clean water or a carrier oil.

    Jewelweed

    • Jewelweed, also known as impatiens, can also be used. Gently rub the leaves on the rash several times a day. You can also boil the leaves and dab the "tea" on your rash.

    Powdered Goldenseal Root

    • Powered goldenseal root can be combined with hot water and dabbed on the rash to help speed healing.

    Apple Cider Vinegar

    • Use apple cider vinegar as a natural cure for poison ivy or poison oak. Combine in equal parts with water, rub on and allow to air dry. Reapply as needed.

    Flaxseed Oil

    • Both Itchy Skin Rash.com and Natural Health Web.com say that taking flaxseed oil by mouth, and applying it directly to the rash will help to relieve and heal.
