Eczema is a skin disease that affects millions of Americans. The itching and redness associated with the disease can cause extreme irritation and pain.

What

Eczema, also known as dermatitis, is a noncontagious skin disorder that causes itching and swelling.

Causes

Certain soaps, materials and environmental conditions such as extreme heat or cold can trigger an outbreak of eczema.

Symptoms

Eczema is an itchy rash on the surface of the skin. According to Web MD, the itching sometimes begins before the rash is visible. It is most commonly on the face, knees, hands or feet.

Appearance

Dry, thick, flaky patches of skin are an indication of eczema. In addition to the rash, people with light skin tones often experience redness around the rash which then turns brown. Eczema affects dark skinned people differently, causing the area to become either lighter or darker.

Tretment

Keeping the skin hydrated is the best way to treat eczema. Using topical, over the counter creams such as hydrocortisone will help with itching and inflammation. If the area becomes infected your doctor may prescribe antibiotics.
