Depression, a disorder typically recognized by psychological changes such as feelings of worthlessness and prolonged periods of decreased mood, can also manifest itself through a myriad of physical symptoms. Those afflicted by depression are often unaware of the causes of their physical symptoms and fail to seek treatment as a result.

    Sleep

  1. Depression frequently causes extreme changes in sleep patterns. An inability to sleep or the need for an overabundance of sleep can both be detrimental signs of depression..
  2. Diet

  3. Depression can manifest itself through changes in diet including both under and overeating. Diet changes during depressive episodes often coincide with an unhealthy level of weight gain or loss.
  4. Chronic Pain

  5. Otherwise unexplained pain can result from depression. This symptom can include either the creation of new pains or the extension and intensification of past injuries.
  6. Digestive Tract

  7. Depression can have negative effects on the digestive tract, resulting in nausea, constipation and diarrhea.
  8. Diverse Populations

  9. Some cultures recognize depression almost entirely through physical rather than psychological symptoms. Young children, who may be unable to grasp the mental concepts of depression, also show depression through physical symptoms.
