Mupirocin ointment USP is the generic name for the brand name Bactroban. It is an antibacterial that is used in the treatment of a skin infection called impetigo. Mupirocin inhibits the production of specific proteins that provide nourishment to bacteria.

    Ingredients

  1. Mupirocin Ointment USP comes in the form of a 22 gram tube. The ingredients include: mupirocin (22 mg per gram), polyethylene glycol 400 and polyethylene glycol 3350.
  2. Administration

  3. Apply mupirocin ointment to the impetigo affected area thrice a day. It can take between three and five days for the impetigo infection to disappear. If there is no improvement after five days, you should contact your doctor.
  4. Side Effects

  5. The most common side effects of mupirocin ointment include: burning or stinging sensation, itching, skin rash, dry skin and nausea. Most users of mupirocin experience little or no side effects.
  6. Precaution

  7. Pregnant women or those who plan to become pregnant, nursing mothers, and people with kidney problems should consult with their doctors before using mupirocin ointment.
  8. Warning

  9. Avoid using mupirocin ointment on areas with open wounds. Mupirocin ointment is not supposed to be used by children under the age of 2 months.
