What Are the Treatments for Scabies With Steroids?

The symptoms of a scabies mite infection are a direct result of an allergy to both the mite and the feces of the mite. The skin may have pimple-like lesions that are caused by the burrowing of the mites into the skin. Scabies can be effectively treated with several steroid-based medications, but there are no over-the-counter medications for the condition.

  1. Permethrin Cream

    • Permethrin cream is the medical option most favored by doctors for scabies treatment. It is applied at night and washed off the next morning.

    Lindane Lotion

    • Lindane lotion is often prescribed for people who have scabies. Unfortunately, lindane can be resistant to scabies and is not recommended for pregnant women or people with other skin irritations.

    Crotamiton Lotion

    • Crotamiton lotion and crotamiton cream are also prescribed for scabies. These are considered safe for adults but are not approved for use by children.

    Oral Ivermectin

    • Ivermectin is an oral antiseptic and is not FDA approved for the treatment of scabies. However, it may be used for treatment if all other scabies medications have failed to eliminate the scabies infection.

    Topical Itch Cream

    • Irritated-skin itch can be relieved after the scabies infection has been effectively treated. Topical steroid creams as well as oral antihistamines may be used.
