Is There a Medication That Can Raise Blood Pressure?

Medication for low blood pressure

While most people are familiar with high blood pressure, some suffer from the opposite condition of low blood pressure. There are a variety of treatments for low blood pressure including medication.

Hypotension

Low blood pressure is a condition known as hypotension where blood pressure is well below the normal range for one's age group. Symptoms may include dizziness, feeling light headed or, in severe cases, fainting.

Drug Treatment for Low Blood Pressure

There are two primary drugs used to treat hypotension: Fludrocortisone and Midodrine. They are typically used in conjunction with other treatments or when other treatments have proven ineffective.

Fludrocortisone

Fludrocortisone is a corticosteroid that increases blood pressure by causing fluid retention that produces mild swelling. It can also cause a potassium deficiency so potassium may need to be supplemented while taking it.

Midodrine

Midodrine effects the smaller arteries and veins to produce an increase in blood pressure. This drug restricts the ability of these blood vessels to expand.

Other Treatments

Low blood pressure is also treated with lifestyle changes such as reducing caffeine intake, eating more salt and drinking more water. Regular exercise is also known to be a factor in maintaining normal blood pressure.
