- Thin set mortar is a blend of cement, aggregate and special additives. This type of cement is designed to adhere well in thin layers that are usually no more than 3/16 of an inch thick. It is an adhesive that is used to set interior and exterior tiles.

Different companies produce several different types of thin set that vary along the lines of drying times, bonding properties, water resistance and shrinkage factors when applying the thin set in a thicker application.
