Information on Sally Holmes Climbing Rose Bush

Bred in the United Kingdom and introduced in 1976, the Sally Holmes climbing rose bush was honored as American Rose Society members' top-rated large garden and exhibition rose from 1994 to 1996. It is a hybrid created by crossing Ballerina roses and Ivory Fashion roses. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Color

    • Sally Holmes climbing rose buds are peachy pink and open to creamy white blooms with a hint of pink or apricot and golden centers. Open flowers are 3.5 inches and contain five petals. The long canes have glossy green leaves.

    Blooms

    • Clusters of slightly sweet scented single blooms appear in late spring or early summer; the plant blooms continuously throughout the growing season. Blooms may be used in cut arrangements and have a long vase life.

    Growth

    • It may be grown as a compact bush, but performs best as a climbing rose. Sally Holmes climbing rose can be trained to grow on a trellis, fence or pillar. The rose will grow upwards of 15 feet in milder climates and 10 feet or more in moderate climates.

    Sun

    • Sally Holmes climbing rose will tolerate some shade but prefers full sun. The plant is hardy to USDA Zones 5 through 9.

    Common Pests and Problems

    • Aphids and spider mites can be controlled with chemical sprays. Japanese beetles must be removed by hand and discarded. Fungal infections can be prevented by watering only at the base of the plant and removing any diseased leaves.
