What Is the File Extension Act?

Unidentified .ACT files on your computer may be Microsoft Office help files, Adobe Photoshop system components, or pieces of an obscure proprietary software package.

  1. Microsoft Office Actor File

    • Probably the most common use of the .ACT extension is in Microsoft Office Actor files. These files define the animated "Office Assistant" actors (most notoriously, the paperclip) that pop up to help new users complete basic tasks in Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.

    Adobe Photoshop Color Table

    • Adobe Photoshop is known to save and load custom color tables using the .ACT file extension.

    FoxPro Action Diagram

    • The FoxPro programming language uses .ACT for Action Diagram files (similar to flowcharts). If you are not a FoxPro programmer or running any FoxPro-based software, it is unlikely that FoxPro would be the source of .ACT files on your system.

    Proprietary Uses

    • Acronyms and abbreviations can sometimes be used to decipher unpublished uses of file extensions in proprietary medical, financial or IT infrastructure software. Possible uses of ACT include Action, Activation or Application Compatibility Toolkit.

    Future

    • There is no standard for creating new file extensions. With new software being created every day, it is likely that the .ACT extension will see new uses in the future.
