Although trips to the dentist are not always pleasant, dental professionals such as dental hygienists can ease fears by explaining procedures and making patients as comfortable as possible.

  1. Description

    • As trained health care professionals, dental hygienists assist the dentist with many aspects of patient care. Hygienists promote oral hygiene, perform cleanings, take x-rays and assist with other dental procedures.

    Working Conditions

    • Dental hygienists often work eight hours a day or 40 hours a week in dental offices. Some hygienists are also employed by hospitals, schools and research laboratories.

    Education

    • Dental hygienists must obtain a minimum of an associate degree from an accredited dental program and pass a state licensing exam as well as a national exam administered by the American Dental Association (ADA).

    Earnings

    • Annual earnings for dental hygienists vary depending on experience, geographical location and job responsibilities. According to Payscale.com, hygienists average from $35,750 to $64,648 per year.

    Job Outlook

    • The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that job opportunities for dental hygienists are expected to increase 30 percent through 2016.
