The pH level of 6.0 to 6.8 maintains a slightly acid soil, which is best for most vegetables including tomatoes. Proper moisture content ensures the tomatoes have access to all the nutrients necessary without causing rot.

Prevention

To maintain proper nutrient content and pH balance, lime and calcium can be added to the soil when planting tomatoes. Also, adding a layer of mulch over the dampened soil will help with moisture control.

Solution

If you are finding the soil too alkaline, add sulfur. But if it's too acidic, add more lime. If you are having trouble with either too much or too little water, add a rich organic mixture, such as leaves and compost, to the soil.
