Melatonin Dosage for Dogs

Melatonin is an over-the-counter remedy that can be used to treat mild anxiety in dogs. It's especially helpful in treating separation anxiety as well as fear of loud noises, like thunderstorms and fireworks.

  1. Where to Purchase Melatonin

    • Melatonin can be purchased at any pharmacy or health food store and is usually sold in 1 or 3 mg tablets. It's very inexpensive and is usually tolerated well by most dogs.

    Melatonin for Anxiety

    • If your dog experiences fear or anxiety during thunderstorms or fireworks, melatonin may help. Try to give your dog the melatonin as close to the start of the noise as possible to get the best effect.

    Melatonin for Sleeplessness

    • Melatonin regulates the dog's biological clock, aiding in sleep. It can be used to help dogs who are hyperactive at night and can also work for elderly dogs who may be restless at night.

    Dosage

    • Melatonin should be given no more than three times a day, at eight-hour intervals, as needed.

Small dogs should be given 0.5 to 1 mg
Medium-sized dogs should be given 1 to 3 mg
Large dogs should be given 3 to 9 mg

    Talk to Your Vet

    • Melatonin can have side effects and can interact with other medications. Discuss these issues with your vet before giving melatonin to your dog.
