What Is a Neuroma Tumor?

Neuromas are benign tumors (not cancerous) composed of nerve tissue. They can develop in various areas of the body, most commonly in a nerve on the foot (Morton's neuroma) or a nerve in the head (an acoustic neuroma).

  1. Morton's Neuroma Facts

    • Morton's neuroma usually occurs in the nerve between the third and fourth toes and is caused by thickening of the tissue surrounding the nerves.

    Acoustic Neuroma Facts

    • Acoustic neuromas usually occur on the eighth cranial nerve, which goes from the inner ear to the brain. According to the Mayo Clinic, acoustic neuromas are the most prevalent kind of brain tumor.

    Neuroma Causes

    • As reported by the Mayo Clinic, doctors are unsure of the exact cause of these benign tumors.

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms of Morton's neuromas include burning, sharp pain in your toes or on the ball of your foot. Symptoms of acoustic neuromas include hearing loss (since the tumor presses on the nerve), ringing in your ear, dizziness, numbness in your face and imbalance.

    Morton's Neuroma Treatment

    • Treatment for Morton's neuromas commonly includes using arch supports or changing your footwear. Injections of diluted alcohol or corticosteroids may also be helpful in reducing inflammation and pain.

    Acoustic Neuroma Treatment

    • Treatment for acoustic neuromas includes monitoring the tumor to determine how fast it is growing (especially if you aren't experiencing any significant symptoms), stereotactic radiosurgery (which uses radiation to the tumor and halts its growth) and surgical removal (to save hearing and thwart paralysis in the face).
