Orthodontic braces

Orthodontic braces are used to adjust a person's teeth, including treatment for crooked teeth, buck teeth and other dental problems. These days, braces come in several different types in addition to the standard metal.

  1. Dentist or Orthodontist?

    • Orthodontists are dental specialists and have additional training in the application of braces. A regular dentist does not generally have these extra qualifications and training. Therefore, when braces are needed, an orthodontist must be consulted.

    Types of Braces

    • There are several different types of braces available. The most common are the metal braces, which are made of stainless steel, silver or sometimes gold. If someone has an allergy to other metals, gold is a good alternative since rarely does it cause an allergic response. These days, metal braces can have different colored brackets or clear brackets. There are also braces that are positioned behind the teeth so they are not noticeable. One of the newer types of braces available is the clear plastic type that fits over the teeth to gradually straighten minor problems.

    History

According to Archwired.com, braces have been around for a very long time, although they were devices far more primitive than what we have today. Archaeologists have found evidence in ancient tombs in Egypt and Greece where skeletons have had wire wrapped around their teeth. In the 1700s, Frenchman Pierra Fauchard developed a horseshoe shaped device called a bandeau that enlarged the arch of the mouth. Since then, orthodontia has continued to improve.

    Effects

    • Braces can be used by children and adults and can have beneficial effects. Having straight teeth not only improves appearance, but helps correct problems associated with misalignment of the teeth, such as speech problems or biting and chewing problems. When teeth are straight and not crooked, they are easier to keep clean. A toothbrush can better reach the spaces between straight teeth. Of course, straight teeth also create a pleasing smile which can bolster self esteem.

    Cost

The cost of orthodontic braces varies depending on the severity of the dental problems involved. Many dental insurance plans include benefits for orthodontia and most orthodontists will gladly work out a payment plan, with or without a down payment. While braces are not inexpensive, the long ranging benefits are worth the cost.
