Role of the Community in Earthquake Preparedness

Communities in seismically active areas need to be adequately prepared for the occurrence of an earthquake. Both individuals and communities should take the necessary steps to work together.

Education

  • Make sure all residents are properly educated about earthquake preparedness measures, what to do for protection during an earthquake, and actions taken in the hours and days following a seismic event. As earthquakes can strike without warning, proper education and preparedness are absolutely key.

Community Preparedness

  • Communities can be prepared for earthquakes by ensuring stringent building codes are followed when new construction takes place; retrofitting older structures with reinforcement modifications is another crucial step.

Earthquake Kit

  • The community should encourage all residents, businesses, and schools to keep earthquake kits on hand with at least three days worth of essential supplies, including first aid, medications, food, toiletries, a battery operated radio and flashlights, extra batteries and other necessary items.

Emergency Response

  • The community should be appropriately prepared for all forms of rapid emergency response immediately following an earthquake; training programs for emergency personnel should specifically include aspects of dealing with earthquake hazards.

Aftershocks

  • Communities should encourage residents and individuals to remain vigilant for aftershocks following the primary earthquake event, which can all occur without warning.
