What Does an Air Conditioner Expansion Valve Do?

Air-conditioning units, whether in your home, car or office, dehumidify and cool the air. Refrigerant vapor is pumped, under high heat and pressure, from the compressor to the condenser, where it is cooled and changed to liquid. The receiver/drier removes the moisture and the refrigerant is moved to the expansion valve, where it expands before entering the evaporator. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Lowers Pressure

    • The expansion valve lowers the pressure from liquid refrigerant, causing it to expand and become refrigerant vapor as it moves to the evaporator.

    Regulates Flow

    • The expansion valve regulates the refrigerant flowing to the evaporator coils.

    Thermostatic Expansion Valve

    • A thermostatic expansion valve maintains constant heat in the evaporator.

    Defective Valve

    • A defective expansion valve will stop the air conditioner from delivering cool air and should be brought to a professional for repair.

    Clogged Valve

    • If you're not getting cooled air, or only a little cool air, the expansion valve could be clogged.

    Fun Fact

    • The expansion valve is also known as the metering device.
