Tricor Vs. Generic Zocor

There are several triglyceride and cholesterol lowering medications currently available. Most are prescribed only after non-drug therapy, such as after diet, exercise and weight control measures have been exhausted.

  1. Cholesterol and Triglycerides

    • Generic Zocor is generally used to lower cholesterol levels in the blood. Tricor also lowers cholesterol, but is most often prescribed to lower triglycerides.

    Major Differences

    • Although both Tricor and generic Zocor lower blood fat, Zocor alone is not normally used to lower triglycerides. Tricor lowers triglycerides and cholesterol.

    Cost

    • Tricor (fenofibrate) and Zocor (simvastatin) are both reasonably priced for cholesterol and triglyceride lowering medications. Both have been on the market for several years.

    Side Effects

    • Both medications have side effects, some of which could be serious. The more common side effects include nausea, muscle weakness or stiffness, headache, fever, chest congestion and difficulty breathing.

    Availability and Dosing

    • Tricor and generic Zocor are both readily available at most pharmacies. If prescribed, both medications must be taken as directed without missing doses.
