What Can Be Done Topically for Broken Capillaries?

Broken capillaries are tiny blood vessels located at the surface of the skin. If blood leaks out of the vessels they can appear as a blotch or a streak. Many people who have them look for solutions to make them less visible or disappear altogether.

  1. Causes

    • Broken capillaries are most visible and common on the face. They can be caused either by trauma, age or prolonged sun exposure

    Long term sun damage

    • Too much time in the sun can wear down the skin and make it thin. The damaged blood vessels can then show up more easily under thin skin.

    Treatments

    • Although there are topical treatments available for purchase, none of them are magic. According to Dr. Edmund Clement of Family Dermatology in Norcross, Georgia, topical creams are definitely not the answer.
"Once you have the dilated vessels, the only real option is laser treatment," re-affirmed Dr. Clement.

    Laser treatment

    • Usually just one laser treatment can remove the dilated vessels. The light from the laser absorbs the blood and over a short time, will make the broken vessel disappear. Minor discomfort is reported with the treatment during and after.

    Side Effects

    • The side effects could include skin redness, crustiness, blisters and skin discoloration. All are temporary.
