Paul Mitchell’s Tea Tree Special Shampoo and Conditioner contain tea tree oil, an extract of the indigenous Australian shrub, Melaleuca alternifolia—better known as the tea tree.
According to Cynthia Olsen in “The Benefits of Tea Tree,” a shampoo containing tea tree oil can “unblock clogged hair follicles, moisturize the hair and keep the scalp free of bacteria and fungal problems.”
Tea Tree Special Shampoo “cleanses the hair, scalp and body of impurities,” according to PaulMitchell.com. The shampoo and the conditioner also contain lavender and peppermint extracts, which the company calls an “exhilarating” combination.
According to the Department of Health & Human Services, Tea Tree Special Shampoo and Conditioner “may cause irritation to sensitive skin types.”
Olsen states that 10 drops of a 2 percent tea tree oil solution can be used with any natural shampoo to rejuvenate your hair.
A 2002 study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology suggests that adults who wash their hair once a day with shampoo containing 5 percent tea tree oil may experience relief from dandruff.
