Types of Chilean Wines

Chile is known as a "new world" wine country, and is considered among the best wine producers in South America. Known for its "value" wines, Chile's production of moderate to expensive bottles is on the rise. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Cabernet Sauvignon

    • Chile's number one wine is Cabernet. It is the most consistent in quality.

    Carmenere

    • Brought to Chile in the late nineteenth century from France, it is a good, medium-bodied red wine.

    Merlot

    • Many wines labeled merlot may actually be carmenere, and vice versa.

    Pais

    • A lesser-known but major grape, pais was Chile's first wine and most widely planted. It is mostly used for jug wines.

    Sauvignon Blanc

    • A light and fresh wine with a crisp clean texture.

    Chardonnay

    • Just as important as cabernet, most of the plantings of this varietal have been targeted for the United States--Chile's number one importer.
