When your skin breaks out into a rash, it can be difficult to know what may be causing the problem. Sometimes, rashes are caused by bacterial or viral infections, which can be contagious and should be treated by a medical doctor.

Bacterial skin infections include psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and ringworm. They can easily spread around the body and can be extremely itchy.

Viral skin infections include chicken pox, measles, fifth disease and shingles. They are highly contagious and are often accompanied by a fever.

Treatment for bacterial skin infections involves applying steroidal creams and coal tar soaps and shampoos.
Viral Treatments

Treatment for viral infections involves applying soothing, anti-itching creams and drinking plenty of fluids.
When to Seek Help

If the skin infection appears to worsen significantly, even with treatment, or if there is a fever that lasts more than three days, consult a physician.
