Bacterial & Viral Skin Infections

When your skin breaks out into a rash, it can be difficult to know what may be causing the problem. Sometimes, rashes are caused by bacterial or viral infections, which can be contagious and should be treated by a medical doctor.

  1. Bacterial Infections

    • Bacterial skin infections include psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and ringworm. They can easily spread around the body and can be extremely itchy.

    Viral Infections

    • Viral skin infections include chicken pox, measles, fifth disease and shingles. They are highly contagious and are often accompanied by a fever.

    Bacterial Treatments

    • Treatment for bacterial skin infections involves applying steroidal creams and coal tar soaps and shampoos.

    Viral Treatments

    • Treatment for viral infections involves applying soothing, anti-itching creams and drinking plenty of fluids.

    When to Seek Help

    • If the skin infection appears to worsen significantly, even with treatment, or if there is a fever that lasts more than three days, consult a physician.
