What Are Almanda Flowers?

The allamanda, also known as Golden Trumpet Vine or Buttercup Flower, is a flowering vine native to Brazil. The allamanda is part of the dogbane family and can also be considered a shrub. The Puerto Rican city of Canóvanas uses the allamanda as its city flower.

Flowers

Allamandas have long, tubular yellow flowers that smell slightly fruity. The flowers resemble trumpets, hence their common name Golden Trumpet Vine.

Climate

Allamandas grow well in temperatures between 50 and 75 degrees with high humidity. They will bloom year round if grown in warm climates.

Size

If left untamed, allamandas can sprawl out up to 15 feet. In South America, they are often found tangling along roadsides and rivers.

Pests

Spider mites, white fly and tiny, waxy little insects called mealy bugs are all threats to allamanda and can be prevented with pesticide.

Toxicity

Allamandas are poisonous to humans. The sap of allamanda flowers can cause rashes and blisters.
