Throughout the centuries, many cultures have practiced abstinence from sexual activity. This has led to theories and myths about the effects of abstinence, including how it affects male erections and performance.

    Abstinence

  1. People may abstain from sexual activity for a variety of reasons. For some, it is a lifestyle choice, or one predicated on health concerns. For others, it is a tenant of religious belief. For others, abstinence may occur haphazardly, due to a scarcity of sexual partners.
  2. Theories/Speculation

  3. There are dozens of theories about abstinence. People have made claims that it enhances sexual performance, while others have theorized that abstinence causes impotence and erectile dysfunction. But these are only theories, after all, and scientific evaluation shows that abstinence has no effect on sexual performance when practiced in moderation.
  4. Benefits

  5. Abstaining from sexual activity drastically reduces the chances of contracting sexually transmitted diseases and HIV. Abstinence also prevents unwanted pregnancy.
  6. Effects

  7. There are no known physical side effects for males that abstain from sexual activity. The body will expel any build-up of semen through nocturnal emissions, and a majority of men will still experience involuntary erections, mostly while sleeping.
  8. Considerations

  9. Although abstinence has no harmful effect on male erections, there are many health benefits from being sexually active. Scientific studies have shown that sexual activity can help decrease the risk of prostate cancer, improve fitness and reduce the risk of heart disease.
