Red maple takes its name from the fact that in winter it has red twigs and buds, in the spring it has red flowers and in the autumn the leaves typically turn red before coming off.
Size

The red maple can grow to 70 to 80 feet tall in open spaces, with a trunk diameter of between 1 and 2 feet. The leaves have three lobes in most cases and are from 2 to 6 inches wide.

As far as trees go, the red maple is somewhat short-lived, rarely living beyond 150 years.

Because red maple can exist in many different environs, the tree often grows with varied types of other tree species, such as paper birch, gray birch, yellow poplar and black cherry. It often grows in pure stands in large numbers as well.
