Botox Injections Drug Side Effects

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Botox was the top nonsurgical cosmetic procedure in 2008, with more than 5 million injections delivered in the United States. As with any medical procedure, side effects are possible. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Identification

    • Itching, rash and red itchy welts could signal an allergic reaction to Botox. Wheezing, asthma symptoms, dizziness, feeling faint, loss of strength, muscle weakness, vision problems, trouble talking, trouble breathing and trouble swallowing can be indication of a more serious reaction.

    Duration

    • Side affects from Botox can appear hours to weeks after receiving the injection. Symptoms usually last a few hours, but can last for weeks after treatment.

    Causes

    • Allergic reaction, incompatibility with other medicines and pre-existing conditions can cause side effects.

    Prevention

    • Discontinue the use of over-the-counter drugs before having a Botox injection. Do not consume alcohol before getting Botox as this can cause bruising. Aspirin and blood thinners should be avoided a week before and after injection.

    Considerations

    • People with pre-existing infection at the injection site, those who experience trouble breathing or swallowing, and people with cardiovascular or neuromuscular disorders should not have Botox.

    Warning

    • In 2009 the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning regarding the potential for paralysis-like symptoms associated with Botox injections. Unexpected loss of strength, loss of bladder control, respiratory problems and death have been reported after Botox injection.
