Description of Bipolar Condition

Bipolar disorder is a mental illness that causes extreme changes in mood. This condition is also known as manic-depression, and it affects approximately 1 percent of the population, according to the Mayo Clinic.

  1. Causes

    • There is no known cause of bipolar disorder, but genetics, biochemical and hormonal imbalances and environmental factors all play a role in the development of this condition.

    Manic Phase

    • The symptoms of the manic phase of bipolar disorder include extreme optimism, euphoria, inflated self-esteem, rapid speech, poor judgment, aggressive behavior, racing thoughts, agitation, increased physical activity, increased sex drive, risky behavior, spending sprees, inability to concentrate and drug abuse.

    Depressive Phase

    • The symptoms of the depressive phase of bipolar disorder include hopelessness, sadness, anxiety, guilt, suicidal thoughts or behavior, insomnia, fatigue, appetite problems, inability to concentrate, loss of interest in everyday activities, irritability and chronic pain with an unknown cause.

    Treatment

    • People suffering from bipolar disorder must continue to take their medication, even if they begin to feel better. Mood stabilizers, antidepressants, anti-seizure medication, antipsychotic medication and anti-anxiety medication are commonly prescribed medications for bipolar disorder. Psychotherapy, electroconvulsive therapy and hospitalization may also be used.

    Warning

    • Bipolar disorder can ultimately ruin a person's life if left untreated. This condition can lead to suicide, legal problems, substance abuse, alcohol abuse, financial problems, isolation and poor performance in work and school.
