Why Are the Pores on My Face So Big?

Pictures of models and actresses photoshopped to perfection feed our unrealistic expectations for flawless, pore-less skin. This expectation sends many on a search for the perfect treatment or product to shrink or tighten large pores. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Causes

    • The size of our pores are determined mostly by genetics. Factors such as skin type and age can cause them to appear bigger. In oily skin, sebum and dead skin clog pores, darkening and making them seem larger. The aging process causes the skin to sag, often revealing larger looking pores (see Reference 1).

    Misconception

    • Many products and treatments claim to shrink pores permanently. These products and treatments can't shrink pore size, but they can make them less noticeable.

    Benefit

    • Large pores appear more often in oily skin. Because the oil lubricates the skin, it tends to look less wrinkled as it ages (see Reference 2).

    Remedy

    • There are products and treatments to make pores less noticeable. Richard Glogau, MD, of the University of California at San Francisco, says, "A topical retinoid will unclog pores and stimulate collagen growth making the pore appear less visible" (see Reference 3). Chemical peels and microdermabrasion treatments smooth the texture of the skin, making the pores seem smaller.

    Warning

    • Avoid squeezing blemishes as this can cause scarring and make the pores appear larger.
