Fosamax Radiation Side Effects

Fosamax (alendronate) is a bisphosphonate medication prescribed to prevent and treat bone density loss (osteoporosis). Fosamax has been linked to a severe bone disorder, and current or previous radiation therapy is a risk factor.

  1. Warning

    • Rarely, people taking Fosamax have developed a serious disorder called osteonecrosis of the jaw, resulting in destruction of bone tissue.

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms of osteonecrosis of the jaw may include pain, numbness, swelling, loose teeth, and gum inflammation or infection.

    Disease Progression

    • Untreated osteonecrosis of the jaw can progress to bone infection, bone destruction, exposed bone in the mouth and irreversible jaw collapse.

    Risk Factors

    • Risk factors for osteonecrosis of the jaw associated with Fosamax and other bisphosphonates include cancer, chemotherapy, steroids and radiation therapy, particularly to the head or neck. Radiation to the jaw area can cause similar effects without taking bisphosphonates.

    Dental History

    • Most people who have developed osteonecrosis of the jaw while taking bisphosphonates already had dental disease or recently had undergone a dental procedure, such as having a tooth removed, as noted by the Family Gentle Dental Care website.
