Appearance

Lateral filing cabinets are usually much shorter and wider than the vertical standard. The files inside run from left to right, as opposed to front to back.

Advantages

Because the laterally oriented filing cabinet allow for right-to-left organization of your files, items are more easily located and accessed than they would be in the vertical counterpart.

Disadvantages

Lateral filing cabinets are usually much wider than the vertical filing cabinets, taking up a large portion of floor space.

Types

Lateral filing cabinets are made in a variety of different styles and sizes. Most of them have two drawers, with some containing one or three or more.

As of 2009, these filing cabinets range in price from approximately $150 to $500 or more. The pricier cabinets often are made of wood and are very stylized.
