Wireless Internet Technology

Wireless Internet technology has been gaining in popularity as more people use portable devices such as netbooks and laptops. Besides the traditional WiFi used in homes and businesses, it's now possible to connect in places never thought possible.

  1. WiFi at Home and in Public Locations

    • WiFi is the most common wireless Internet technology. It allows multiple connections from devices such as a laptop, netbook, iPod or any compatible device. WiFi is limited to a range of about 100-300 feet.

    3G on the Go

    • So-called third generation, or 3G, is capable of connecting at broadband speeds over a cellular network. It is available in most major U.S. cities, smaller markets around the country and is the most common technology for mobile Internet connection.

Dish Up Your Internet via Satellite

    • Satellite Internet

Satellite Internet service is ideal for those who live in remote locations not covered by other technologies; however, its speeds are slower than other wireless Internet solutions. The technology uses a small dish mounted on a roof and a modem between your PC and the dish. The signal is both sent and received between the satellite and the dish.

    Fixed Wireless

    • Radio tower
      Radio tower

Fixed wireless uses point-to-multipoint to provide broadband wireless Internet in remote areas. The service uses towers to beam a signal from point to several locations. The signal is received via a small mounted dish or antenna. The range is typically 10-20 miles depending on conditions.

    4G WiMax for Maximum Internet

    • The latest wireless Internet technology operates over a cellular network. WiMax signals go for miles and can transmit up to 30 miles from a cell tower. Broadband speeds are available over an entire city, on a train, outside in a park or even in the car.
