What Are the Stages of Becoming a Dental Nurse?

In U.K. dental practices, the position of dental nurse is integral. Dental nurses need to complete both education and experience in order to work. The General Dental Council approves all courses and sets requirements.

  1. Courses Available

    • First and foremost, you need to obtain a degree in dental nursing. The current degrees available are: a national certificate, an NVQ or VRQ Level 3, or a certificate of higher learning.

Dental Hospital or Higher Education College

    • You may take a course at an accredited dental hospital or higher education college.

    Experience

    • Every dental nurse must have experience in dental surgery before they can start their career. This may seem like an impossible feat, but often times experience in surgery is integrated into course-work.

    Volunteer

    • Volunteering a dental hospital is a great way to accrue experience before heading out into the job market; you may also find a future employer or the connections needed to get a job through volunteer work.

    Job Search

    • The internet is a great place to look for current job postings, once you have finished your schooling and have gotten some experience. You might also want to look at job postings under certain dental hospital's websites. The military is also a common employer for dental nurses.
