Passport Regulations in the United States

If you are planning on traveling abroad and you do not have a U.S. passport, you need to apply for one. Familiarity with the regulations concerning U.S. passports will make it faster and easier for you to get your passport.

Application

Unless you are renewing your passport, you need to apply for your U.S. passport in person. Download and complete Form DS-11 and submit it to your local passport agency.

Proof of Citizenship

To apply for a U.S. passport, you must provide evidence that you are a U.S. citizen, such as a previously issued U.S. passport, naturalization certificate, certificate of citizenship, consular report of birth abroad or certified birth certificate.

Needed Documents

You'll need a form of identification, a copy of that identification and two passport photos. Acceptable identifications include a previously issued U.S. passport, naturalization certificate, valid driver's license, valid government ID or valid military ID.

Passport Photos

The two passport photos you submit must be identical, in color and 2 inches by 2 inches in size. The photos must have been taken during the past six months and show your current appearance.

Cost

Adult passports cost between $20 and $95, and passports for minors cost between $10 and $70.
