Nerontin for Fibromyalgia Treatment

Neurontin (gabapentin) is a prescription medication used for treatment of seizure disorders and neuropathic pain. It is commonly prescribed for treatment of fibromyalgia.

  1. Dosing

    • Gabapentin is available in 100, 300 and 400 mg capsules, 600 and 800 mg tablets and as an oral solution. The maximum recommended daily dosage is 1800 mg, taken as 600 mg three times during the day.

    Interactions

    • Antacids reduce the effectiveness of gabapentin by lowering the levels that are absorbed into the blood stream. Consult your pharmacist or physician regarding any other potential medication interactions.

    Side Effects

    • Common side effects include fatigue, drowsiness, dizziness, vision changes, weight gain, dry mouth, dehydration, hoarseness, confusion and depression.

    Warnings

    • Gabapentin should not be taken while pregnant, since it may cause serious harm to the developing fetus. Gabapentin may increase the risk of suicidal ideation, suicide attempts and completed suicide, so additional monitoring of symptoms is necessary when prescribing gabapentin to an individual with a history of mental illness.

    Function

    • Gabapentin reduces pain and improves sleep for individuals suffering from fibromyalgia. The exact reason why this medication is effective is not known.
