What Is Hydroxyzine HCL Prescribed For?

Vistaril (hydroxyzine) is a prescription medication that is used to treat anxiety disorders, insomnia and as an antihistamine for treating allergic reactions. It also is used for anesthesia.

  1. Dosing

    • Hydroxyzine is available in 10mg, 25mg, 50mg and 100mg tablets and capsules, an oral solution and injectible form. Recommended dosages vary depending on the individual and the condition being treated.

    Time Frame

    • Hydroxyzine is not intended for long-term treatment of any condition. Daily use of hydroxyzine for over four months for treating insomnia or anxiety is not recommended.

    Contraindications

    • Hydroxyzine is not recommended during pregnancy, since it may cause birth defects.

    Interactions

    • Hydroxyzine can increase the depressant effects of many medications, including narcotic and non-narcotic analgesics, barbiturates and benzodiazepines, so it is recommended that a lower dosage be considered when taking any of these medications with hydroxyzine.

    Side Effects

    • Common side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth, headache and allergic reaction resulting in skin rash.
