What Is Open Face Sandpaper?

The most important distinguishing characteristic among sandpapers is the type and amount of abrasive particles embedded in the paper. Open face sandpaper is defined by the way these particles are arranged.

  1. Grit

    • "Grit" is a measure of the number of abrasive particles per square inch of sandpaper. The higher the grit, the more particles there are, so the finer the sandpaper.

    Open Face

    • Grit will either completely cover the sandpaper, or it will be applied in such a way that there is spacing between the grit particles. This second kind of paper is called open face sandpaper.

    Benefit

    • Open face sandpaper has only 40 percent to 70 percent grit coverage. The spaces between the grit prevent the sandpaper from clogging with sanded-off surface material.

    Uses

    • Since open face paper is less likely to clog, it is a better choice for use on gummy or soft woods, soft metals or painted surfaces.

    Considerations

    • Since there is a limited amount of grit on open face sandpaper, you will be able to remove only small amounts of surface material at a time.
