Why Would You Remove a Thyroid Gland?

The thyroid gland is located in the neck above your collarbone and is responsible for producing hormones and regulating your metabolism. Removing the thyroid is known as a thyroidectomy.

Types

Thyroid removal can either be performed as a treatment for someone who already is suffering from a thyroid disease or it can be performed as a preventative measure for people likely to contract a thyroid disease, such as thyroid cancer.

Time Frame

For a day or two after surgery, you may have low blood calcium. You will usually have to abstain from strenuous activity for at least a week, but you should be able to resume all of your activities within two or three weeks.

Benefits

A thyroidectomy may be the only way to prevent the disease from spreading, so removing the gland may be the only treatment. In addition, if you are at a high risk of developing a thyroid disease, removal might be the best option.

Warning

There are several possible side effects from a thyroidectomy, including damage to your parathyroid glands and vocal cords.

Prevention

According to the Mayo Clinic, the radiation can increase your chances of getting thyroid cancer, but you can lower your risk by taking potassium iodide.
