Alabama Window Tint Laws

In the United States, there are laws governing tinting windows of automobiles, which determine the amount of light transmission and light reflectivity allowed. In Alabama, the law governing the amount of tinting allowed on windows was passed in August 1996.

  1. Measuring Window Tint

    • Window tint levels in Alabama are determined by the percentage of visible light transmission, which measures the amount of light that comes through a window and a tinted film.

    Windshield

    • Alabama law states that only the uppermost 6 inches of the windshield may be tinted. On the windshield, this tint must be nonreflective.

Front Side, Rear Side and Back Window

    • Front side, rear side, and back windows must let more than 32 percent of light in through the combination of the window and tinted film. The window tinting film must not reflect more than 20 percent of light on front side or rear side windows.

    Medical Exemptions

    • Certification for exemption from Alabama's window tinting law may be granted by a licensed physician in the case of certain medical conditions.

    No Restrictions

    • In Alabama, there are no restrictions on side mirrors or on color of tinting.

    Certification

    • All window tinting must be done with certified film. A sticker, supplied by the window tinting manufacturer, must be applied on every tinted window showing compliance with light transmission and reflection laws in Alabama.
