How Does Xanax Help an Anxiety Attack?

Xanax is a prescription medication used for treating symptoms of anxiety disorders, including panic attacks. Its generic name is alprazolam.

  1. Dosing

    • Xanax is available in 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg and 2mg tablets.

    Function

    • Xanax reduces anxiety by increasing levels of a neurotransmitter called gamma-aminobytric acid (GABA). GABA has a tranquilizing effect on the body.

    Short Term

    • Xanax is used for short-term treatment of panic attacks. It is usually taken prior to the onset of a panic attack in order to prevent or minimize its severity.

    Long Term

    • Xanax may be taken on a daily basis for management of anxiety. It is recommended that it be taken in three to four divided dosages over the course of the day with the total daily dosage not exceeding 4mg. Long-term use is not usually recommended, since it can lead to psychological and physical dependence.

    Psychotherapy

    • Psychotherapy should be considered in conjunction with Xanax, since it can help teach coping skills for managing panic attacks.
