Why Won't My Gardenia Flower?
Gardenias are flowering shrubs that are treasured for their large, delicate blooms. These distinctive flowers produce an intoxicating fragrance that is widely used in perfumes and lotions. Unfortunately, gardenias are sensitive at best, and even the most promising plant may lose its buds and fail to blossom for a variety of reasons. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Humidity
-
Gardenias require moderate humidity to blossom. If all other aspects of the plant appear healthy, then humidity is probably the problem.
-
Temperature
-
Flower buds won't grow if the temperature is too high. Gardenias rarely thrive if the temperature goes above 70 degrees.
Browning
-
Avoid touching gardenia buds and flowers with your hands--they quickly discolor and turn brown. Keep water off flower buds and blossoms.
Dropped Buds
-
Sometimes the buds will fall off the gardenia plant, never having a chance to open and bloom. This may be because the water you are giving it is too alkaline. Try distilled water instead.
Wilting
-
Your gardenia may wilt without blooming if it experiences a sudden drop in temperature.
