What Are the Duties of a Store Clerk in a Clothing Store?

Save

When you first walk in the store, the first person you see is the store clerk. He's usually friendly and tries to answer your questions and suggest the latest items in the store. He also resolves complaints when needed.

Customer Assistance

  • The main duty of a clothing store clerk is to assist customers. For example, if a customer requests a certain designer, the store clerk would browse through the racks, call the manager for help or go the back of the store to search for it. The store clerk also tries to sell new items to customers by offering discounts.

Stock Work

  • Another thing clothing store clerks do is stock new inventory. They mark the items with various prices, enter the prices into the store's database and hang up the new clothes. In some cases they have to sign the invoices of new deliveries that come in and make sure that the right items were delivered.

Promotions

  • The clothing store clerk also works with management in coming up with ideas for promotions. This is the case when there are slow-selling items in the store or when the staff has to clear all of the previous season's items. This also happens often during the holiday season, which tends to be the busiest.

Handling Transactions

  • Another main duty for store clerks is ringing up items on the register. They make sure the customers are paying the correct price on the items, and at the beginning and end of each shift, they count the funds in their drawers.

Product Knowledge

  • Finally, store clerks should know the items really well, as this helps them assist customers. For example, in a clothing store it's important for clerks to keep up with seasonal trends and designers' latest collections.
