Duties of a Plant Nursery Caretaker

Nursery caretakers work in conjunction with many other workers in the horticulture industry including: landscapers, plant specialists, greenhouse foremen, planting foremen and greenskeepers. Together, they ensure that a nursery is run efficiently and productively.

  1. Types

    • The types of plants grown in a nursery are generally of three sorts: flowers, fruits and vegetables.

    Function

    • The duties of a nursery caretaker are to make decisions on what is planted, when it is planted and when it is harvested. They supervise the other nursery workers in their planting, transporting and harvesting of plants.

    Features

    • Nursery caretakers must have working knowledge of all ecology, environment, plant life, soil and sustainability practices.

    Significance

    • Nursery caretakers are responsible for mass production crops and are directly involved in customer service and sales. The profit of the nursery is correlated to the success of the nursery caretaker.

    • Numerous universities offer degree programs in horticulture ranging from four-year to Ph.D. The other way to become a nursery caretaker is by hands-on experience in entry-level nursery positions.
