Puppy Wormer Side Effects

If the bitch was wormed prior to breeding and during pregnancy, your puppy may not have worms. Take a fecal sample to your veterinarian to be sure. Generally, prescription wormers have no side effects or only mild ones.

  1. Worms

    • The most common worms that puppies have when born are roundworms. Tapeworms, whipworms and hookworms are also found. Heartworms are not common but do occur.

    Rx or OTC

    • Prescription wormers are often made to target most worms and are more effective. Over-the-counter medications are typically less effective and target one or two types of worms. A fecal exam is necessary to know what drug to use.

    Wormers

    • The most common wormers are pyrantel pamoate (brand names Strongid T or Nemex), piperazine, praziquantel and febante. The side-effects are similar in all types.

    Common Reaction

    • Your puppy may have mild diarrhea or vomiting or not want to eat after worming. If your puppy is heavily infested it may throw up worms or pass them in its feces.

    Severe Side Effects

    • If there is severe vomiting or diarrhea or blood in either or your puppy acts very sick, take it to the veterinarian immediately. Signs of an overdose include severe vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, seizures or lethargy.

    Warning

    • Do not mix wormers. Check packaging or ask your veterinarian about interaction with other medications.
