What Is a Backorder of a Domain Name?
Backordering of domain names is a paid service where a new company automatically attempts to register the domain name. A backorder can only be done after the domain is expired and the old owner is no longer interested in renewing it.
-
When Does a Domain Name Expire?
-
A domain name is registered for a minimum of one year and will expire 12 months after the initial registration.
How Do I Know When a Domain Expires?
-
A free service, www.whois.sc, allows public domain name searches that display registration and expiration dates.
-
Grace Period
-
An expired domain name has a grace period of 30 days during which the owner can renew without any additional fees.
Redemption
-
The redemption period starts after the grace period if a domain name has not been renewed. In 2009, domains can be renewed during this time for $150-$250, depending on the registrar.
Pending Delete
-
The domain name registering company will place a domain in pending delete status for up to 90 days. After that the domain name is available for registration by the public.
Does Backordering Work?
-
A backorder of a domain name does not necessarily work because the original domain name owner can at any time contact the registrar to renew the domain name. Once the domain name is deleted from the database, anyone can register it on a first come, first serve basis.
